Jakarta, INTI - Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Technology Nezar Patria urges the public to harness artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance economic growth and national progress.

"So we have to utilize AI to drive economic growth and national progress," he expressed during the Thinktank & Journalist Workshop: Accelerating Responsible AI Governance and Innovation with Copilot for Indonesia at the Pullman Hotel, Central Jakarta, on Monday (06/05/2024).

Wamen Nezar Patria sees the potential of utilizing AI technology evident from many global forums discussing AI utilization and AI Governance.

"The trend of intensifying AI Governance reflects the immense potential of AI," he emphasized.

According to the Deputy Minister, currently, around 26.7 million workers in Indonesia have been assisted by AI technology in performing their jobs.

Moreover, the investment in AI technology in Indonesia from 2022 to 2023 reached USD 7.5 billion, ranking second in Southeast Asia after Singapore.

Wamen Nezar Patria reminds that the presence of AI technology also brings various challenges, such as algorithm biases, the spread of AI-generated misinformation, and the threat of job loss due to AI technology automation. Therefore, the Government has developed various AI-related policies with a dual approach, horizontal and vertical.

"For example, the regulation of the ITE Law and the Personal Data Protection Law reinforced by the Minister of Communication and Information's Circular Letter on AI Ethics Guidelines as an example of the horizontal approach. Then we also encourage harmonious, cross-sector governance as a manifestation of this horizontal approach, then as a manifestation of the vertical approach, we provide space for sectoral policy," he explained.

Wamenkominfo Nezar Patria hopes that through various government policies, the AI ecosystem in Indonesia can develop safely and productively.
