Trends in Internet Penetration in Indonesia in 2024

Jakarta, INTI - Internet penetration in Indonesia continues to show significant growth every year. According to the latest data from the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), internet penetration in Indonesia is projected to reach 79.5% in 2024. This means that 221,563,479 people in Indonesia will be connected to the internet in 2024, out of a total population estimated at 278,696,200 individuals.

Growth of Internet Penetration

The growth of internet penetration in Indonesia has been steadily increasing year by year. In 2018, internet penetration stood at 64.8% and continued to rise to 73.7% in 2019. By 2020, this figure reached 77%, and by 2023, internet penetration had reached 78.19%. In 2024, internet penetration is predicted to reach 79.5%, indicating an increasing awareness and access to information technology among the Indonesian population.

Internet Penetration in Island Regions

Internet penetration in Indonesia also varies based on island regions. Here is the data on internet penetration in several island regions in Indonesia in 2024:

• Sumatra: Internet penetration in Sumatra reaches 77.35%, contributing 20.69% to the total internet users.
• Java: Java has the highest internet penetration at 83.64%, contributing 57.82% to the total internet users in Indonesia.
• Borneo (Kalimantan): Internet penetration in Borneo reaches 77.42%, contributing 6.12%.
• Sulawesi: Internet penetration in Sulawesi reaches 68.35%, contributing 6.47%.
• Bali and Nusa Tenggara: Bali and Nusa Tenggara have internet penetration of 71.80%, contributing 5.12% to the total internet users.
• Maluku and Papua: Internet penetration in Maluku and Papua reaches 69.91%, contributing 3.79%.

Internet Penetration in Underserved Areas

In underserved areas, internet penetration remains a significant challenge. As much as 32.4% of the population in these areas are still not connected to the internet in 2024. However, in these areas, 67.6% of the population, or equivalent to 6,679,632 people, have used the internet. The population in underserved areas totals 9,881,112 individuals, indicating that there is still room for improving internet access in these regions.

Challenges and Opportunities

Although internet penetration in Indonesia continues to increase, several challenges need to be addressed, especially in underserved and remote areas. Factors such as uneven infrastructure, high access costs, and limited skilled human resources in information technology remain major obstacles. Limited internet access in these remote areas causes a digital divide that needs to be immediately addressed to ensure equitable access to information.

However, the increase in internet penetration also opens up great opportunities for various sectors, including education, economy, and health. Wider internet access allows the community to obtain better information and services, increasing productivity and welfare. The education sector, for example, can utilize the internet for distance learning and access to quality educational resources. In the economic sector, the internet enables the development of online businesses and e-commerce that can reach a wider market. In the health sector, telemedicine and access to health information can be enhanced through the internet.
