Jakarta, INTI - Internet penetration in Indonesia shows intriguing developments when viewed through the lens of generational groups. According to the latest data from the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), each generation exhibits varying levels of internet adoption, reflecting the diverse usage patterns of technology among the populace. Projections for 2024 offer important insights into how the internet impacts each age group.

Millennials: Leading Internet Penetration

Millennials, born between 1981 and 1996 (ages 28-43 in 2024), lead in internet penetration with the highest rate at 93.17%. This generation contributes 30.62% to the total internet users in Indonesia in 2024. The high penetration rate indicates that Millennials are the most adaptive to digital and internet technologies. Internet use among Millennials spans a wide range of activities from work and education to entertainment.

Generation Z: Active Internet Users

Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012 (ages 12-27 in 2024), shows an internet penetration rate of 87.02%. They contribute 34.40% to the total internet users, making them the group with the highest contribution to the total internet user base. This generation is known for its reliance on digital technology from a young age. Internet access for Generation Z encompasses not only social media but also online learning and e-commerce.

Generation X: Following the Digital Trend

Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980 (ages 44-59 in 2024), has an internet penetration rate of 83.69%. Their contribution to the total internet users is 18.98%. Although not as high as Millennials and Generation Z, Generation X still shows significant technology adoption. Many use the internet for work, communication, and entertainment, as well as for accessing government services and health information.

Baby Boomers and Pre Boomers: Lower Penetration

Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964 (ages 60-78 in 2024), have an internet penetration rate of 60.52%, contributing 6.58% to the total internet users. Meanwhile, Pre Boomers (born before 1945, ages 79 and above) show the lowest internet penetration rate at 32%, with a contribution of only 0.24%. This generation is slower in adopting digital technology compared to the younger generations, mainly due to challenges in technology adaptation and accessibility.

Post Generation Z: Young Users with Great Potential

Post Generation Z, born after 2013 (under 12 years old in 2024), has an internet penetration rate of 48.10% and contributes 9.17% to the total internet users. Although this rate is not as high as other generations, the potential for growth in internet users in this group is significant as access and use of technology increase at an early age.

Challenges and Opportunities

While internet penetration in Indonesia shows a positive trend, several challenges must be addressed to ensure equitable access. Factors such as uneven infrastructure, high access costs, and low digital literacy in some areas remain major obstacles. The government and internet service providers must collaborate to expand internet coverage, especially in remote and underserved regions. Limited internet access in these remote areas causes a digital divide that needs to be immediately addressed to ensure equitable access to information.

On the other hand, increasing internet penetration opens up substantial opportunities for various sectors. In education, the internet enables more efficient distance learning. In the economic sector, internet penetration drives the growth of e-commerce and online businesses, creating new jobs and boosting the economy. In the health sector, telemedicine becomes more feasible, providing better access to healthcare services.

Internet penetration in Indonesia in 2024 shows interesting variations among generational groups. Millennials and Generation Z lead in internet adoption, while older generations show lower penetration rates. Challenges in achieving equitable internet access remain, but the opportunities presented by increased internet penetration are vast.
