Jakarta, INTI - In an increasingly advanced digital era, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a major driver of innovation across various sectors. However, despite AI's enormous potential, Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics (Wamenkominfo) Nezar Patria emphasizes the importance of applying ethics and integrity in its use. This message was conveyed during the UI Integrity Zone Award 2024 event, held at the Auditorium of the University of Indonesia, Depok, West Java, on Thursday (August 29, 2024).

According to Nezar Patria, AI not only drives progress in innovation but also presents new challenges related to moral responsibility. "AI has become a key catalyst for innovation, especially in academic research and development. However, we must adhere to ethical principles to ensure that AI is used in a proper and responsible manner," he stated.

Furthermore, Deputy Minister Nezar emphasized that the development of generative AI has transformed many aspects of the digital and educational world. AI is predicted to make a significant contribution to the global economy, with an estimated USD 15 trillion by 2030. In Indonesia alone, AI is projected to add USD 366 billion to the economy.

Despite this optimism, Nezar Patria does not overlook the potential threats that could arise if AI is used without regard to ethics. One of his concerns is the potential for plagiarism and intellectual property rights violations in the academic environment. "AI can be an extraordinary tool if used correctly, but we must always be vigilant against the risks and biases that may arise," he stressed.

To address these challenges, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics has issued Circular No. 9 of 2023 on Artificial Intelligence Ethics. The guidelines contain nine principles for AI developers and users in Indonesia, aimed at ensuring that AI-driven innovation remains aligned with applicable ethical norms.

During the event, Deputy Minister Nezar Patria also called for stronger regulations to anticipate the impact of AI across various sectors, including education and healthcare. He invited all stakeholders to work together in building a future that balances technological innovation with ethical values.

"Let us work together to shape a future where technological innovation aligns with and becomes a solution for sustainable and equitable progress for all," he concluded.

The UI Integrity Zone Award 2024 event ended with the presentation of an award to the Faculty of Engineering, which won first place.
