Jakarta, INTI - The launch of Tesla's Cybercab not only shakes the technology industry but also raises significant social, economic, and political concerns. This driverless robotaxi marks the beginning of a transportation revolution, but this major shift raises serious concerns, particularly about the loss of jobs for traditional drivers.

Social Impact: The Threat to Jobs

Driving has been a profession filled by individuals from diverse educational backgrounds. With the arrival of the Cybercab, thousands of drivers in both the conventional taxi sector and ride-hailing face the threat of losing their jobs. This profession has historically required minimal education or skills, making it difficult for drivers to transition into new jobs that demand higher skills, such as in the technology sector or autonomous vehicle maintenance.

For many, age and skill limitations present significant challenges. If they do not qualify for retraining or new jobs that emerge due to this technological advancement, they may be marginalized. This undoubtedly creates broader social issues, such as rising unemployment and increasing economic inequality.

Economic Impact: Savings and Loss of Income

On the other hand, Tesla argues that the Cybercab could save operational costs in the transportation industry. Without drivers, labor costs will be significantly reduced, potentially pushing service prices lower for consumers. However, this cost reduction also means the loss of income for thousands of workers in the transportation sector, which could further exacerbate the economic conditions of low-income communities.

While Tesla and other technology companies see this as an opportunity for economic efficiency, governments and the public sector must prepare for the broader implications for social welfare.

Political Impact: Regulation and Policy

Robotaxis also present new challenges in terms of regulation. Governments need to establish clear legal frameworks regarding the operation of driverless vehicles, particularly in terms of safety and legal liability. In various countries, autonomous vehicles like the Cybercab require special permits and must pass strict feasibility tests before being widely operated.

Politically, there is also pressure to protect the workforce. Some may push for stricter policies to limit the adoption of autonomous technology to protect jobs. Meanwhile, others may advocate for policies that encourage innovation and automation to improve economic efficiency and competitiveness.

What Solutions Are Offered?

Unfortunately, to date, Tesla has not provided concrete solutions to address the social impacts of job losses due to automation. Elon Musk frequently states that new technology will create more job opportunities in other sectors, such as software development and maintenance. However, for workers who lack skills in technology, this transition will be very challenging.

Governments and companies need to collaborate to ensure accessible retraining programs and provide adequate social support for those affected. Additionally, long-term solutions such as universal basic income (UBI) or other social safety nets may need to be considered.
