Jakarta, INTI - The alarming rise in cyber crimes targeting young people in Indonesia has reached unprecedented levels. On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at the Indonesia Internet Expo and Summit (IIXS) during INTI 2024, Usman Kansong, Director General of Public Information and Communication at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo), highlighted the disturbing statistics regarding the exploitation of the internet among children and teenagers.
According to a UNICEF report in 2022, 45% of Indonesian teenagers aged 14-24 have experienced cyberbullying. The breakdown is harrowing: 45% have faced harassment through chat applications, 41% have had their photos or videos shared without consent, and the rest have endured other forms of cyberbullying. These statistics paint a bleak picture of the online safety of Indonesia's youth.
Furthermore, the rise of online gambling among young people is particularly concerning. As of June 2024, 11% of online gambling players are aged 10-20 years (approximately 440,000 individuals), and 13% are aged 21-30 years (around 520,000 individuals). This indicates a growing trend of underage gambling, exacerbating the risks faced by Indonesia’s youth in the digital space.
Kominfo’s efforts to address these issues are evident in their ongoing crackdown on harmful online content. From July 17, 2023, to June 13, 2024, Kominfo has taken down 25,628 pieces of content containing pornography, including 374 pieces of child pornography. These efforts are crucial in the fight against online exploitation and in safeguarding the future of Indonesia's younger generations.
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the need for robust internet safety measures becomes increasingly urgent. Kominfo's actions serve as a stark reminder of the threats lurking online and the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring a safer digital environment for all.
