Jakarta, INTI - Sumatra continues to demonstrate its crucial role in Indonesia's economy. Based on 2024 data, Sumatra's economic growth reached 4.5%, making it one of the main drivers of the national economy. Contributing 22.1% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Sumatra ranks as the second-largest contributor after Java.
Sumatra's economic performance is underpinned by various strategic sectors, such as infrastructure, plantations, mining, agriculture, manufacturing, and services. These sectors not only contribute to economic growth but also support sustainable development, which is a primary focus of the local governments across all provinces in Sumatra.
Sumatra also plays a key role in Indonesia's economic diversification. The region has reduced its dependency on agriculture alone and has begun developing the manufacturing and services sectors. This transformation reflects the government's efforts to expand the country's economic base and create more jobs.
Elen Setiadi, Acting Governor of South Sumatra Province and Deputy for State-Owned Enterprises Business Development, Research, and Innovation at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, emphasized Sumatra's vast potential for investment and cooperation during the 21st Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Chief Minister and Governors' Forum (CMGF) in Johor, Malaysia. "Indonesia offers various cooperation opportunities in trade, tourism, agriculture, and investment in Sumatra," Setiadi said.
Local governments in Sumatra also exhibit strong commitments to driving green economic growth. These efforts focus on developing renewable energy, strengthening sustainable agriculture, and environmental conservation. All these initiatives aim to create a more sustainable future for the next generation.
Elen Setiadi also highlighted the importance of strengthening the capacity and role of local governments to enhance cooperation in the IMT-GT region. This synergy is crucial for maximizing the potential of existing economic corridors and implementing the IMT-GT Visit Year 2023-2025, which is expected to boost tourism in the region. The work programs are also designed to directly benefit local communities.
Digital infrastructure growth in Sumatra is also a key focus. The government is continuously working to expand broadband access to rural areas to foster digital innovation and develop cross-border e-commerce. This is a concrete step to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital era.
Furthermore, Indonesia is preparing to host the 8th IMT-GT Green City Mayors' Council Meeting in Pekanbaru, Riau. This meeting aims to strengthen the commitment to sustainable development in green cities across the IMT-GT region.
Sumatra's strategic role in Indonesia's economy shows that the region is not just a resource-rich area but also a center of sustainable and innovative economic growth. With continued focus on infrastructure development and renewable energy, Sumatra is projected to further bolster the national economy and become a major player on the global stage.
