Jakarta, WISATA – To realize Indonesia's vision as a digitally connected nation, the 6th Indonesia Internet Expo & Summit (IIXS) will host a panel session on "Strategy for Developing Last Mile Infrastructure for Equitable and High-Quality Connectivity." This event will take place on August 12, 2024, as part of the Indonesia Technology and Innovation (INTI 2024) exhibition at JI-EXPO Kemayoran, Jakarta.

Panel Session Speakers

This panel session will feature several prominent figures who play significant roles in the development of digital infrastructure in Indonesia. They include:

  • Jerry Mangasas Swandy, Chairman of the Association of Internet Service Providers Bali Province (BALATEL).
  • Suharyoto, Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers (APJII).
  • Ir. Marvels P. Situmorang, MT, Director General of Postal and Informatics Operations, Ministry of Communication and Informatics.
  • Priyo Suyono, Telecommunications professional and session moderator.

They will discuss various strategies that can be implemented to ensure that last mile infrastructure – the final segment of the internet network that directly connects end-users – provides equitable and high-quality connectivity throughout Indonesia.

The Importance of Last Mile Infrastructure

Last mile infrastructure is a crucial component in the digital ecosystem. Without reliable and widespread infrastructure, many areas in Indonesia, particularly remote ones, will struggle to obtain adequate internet access. According to the latest data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), as of the end of 2023, about 70% of Indonesia's population had internet access. However, there is still a gap in access between urban and rural areas that needs to be addressed immediately.

Infrastructure Development Strategies

Some of the key strategies that will be discussed in this panel session include:

  1. Collaboration between Government and Private Sector: Cooperation between the government and private internet service providers to build and operate last mile infrastructure. This includes joint financing and sharing operational responsibilities.
  2. Utilizing Latest Technologies: Adopting cutting-edge technologies such as 5G and fiber optic networks to improve internet quality and speed. These technologies will enable faster and more stable services and support more complex digital applications.
  3. Local and Community Initiatives: Encouraging active participation from local communities and regional governments in infrastructure development. Initiatives like Digital Villages, aimed at providing internet access in remote villages, are concrete examples of this strategy.
  4. Supportive Regulations and Policies: The government needs to provide regulations and policies that support the development of last mile infrastructure, including incentives for service providers who invest in remote areas.

Challenges and Solutions

Despite the various challenges in developing last mile infrastructure, such as high costs and Indonesia's geographical conditions consisting of many islands, the panelists believe that innovative and collaborative solutions can overcome these obstacles. For instance, using satellite technology for areas difficult to reach by fiber optic cables can be an alternative solution.
