Jakarta, INTI - Minister of Coordinating Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto commenced the series of Ministerial Meeting of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris, France, scheduled for May 2-3, 2024, by holding a bilateral meeting with OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann.

Minister Airlangga was warmly welcomed by Secretary-General Cormann at the Château de la Muette, the headquarters of the OECD. During the meeting, Minister Airlangga expressed appreciation for Secretary-General Cormann's support in overseeing the rapid accession process of Indonesia to the OECD.

As known, Indonesia conveyed its intention for OECD membership in July 2023. In a short period, in February 2024, a decision was obtained from the OECD Council, where all 38 OECD members unanimously agreed to commence Indonesia's accession process to the OECD.

Minister Airlangga conveyed that following the handover of the Roadmap for Indonesia's Accession at the OECD Ministerial Meeting today, Indonesia intends to submit the Initial Memorandum in early 2025. The Initial Memorandum is a document submitted by OECD accession candidate countries to measure the level of regulatory, policy, and practice alignment of the candidate country with the OECD. This document marks the initial stage of the alignment process of regulations, policies, and standards of a country with the OECD.

As the Chairman of the National Team for OECD Accession, Minister Airlangga revealed that domestic coordination processes and communication with OECD member countries and other international partners have been carried out intensively. This is to ensure that Indonesia's membership process progresses swiftly and smoothly. As quick wins, Indonesia will prioritize sectors that have already adopted OECD standards and policies to be resolved first.

Secretary-General Cormann explained that Indonesia's accession will enhance OECD's strategic value. As the country with the largest economy and the only G20 member in the Southeast Asian region, it is undeniable that Indonesia is a significant player in global governance.

In this meeting, Secretary-General Cormann also conveyed his plan to visit Indonesia at the end of May 2024. During the visit, Secretary-General Cormann is scheduled to meet with President Joko Widodo and President-elect Prabowo Subianto for the launch of Indonesia's Accession Roadmap.

Accompanying Minister Airlangga in this meeting are the Minister of Finance of Indonesia, the Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Deputy for International Cooperation Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, and the Ambassador of Indonesia to France, Andorra, Monaco, as well as the Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Indonesia to UNESCO.
