Jakarta, INTI - At the Singapore International Transport Congress & Exhibition (SITCE), SBS Transit, a leading public transport operator in Singapore, announced a strategic collaboration with IBM to enhance its asset management systems using generative AI technology for rail operations and maintenance projects.
This marks a first-of-its-kind collaboration in the Asia-Pacific region, utilizing the IBM Maximo Application Suite (MAS) in the transportation rail asset management system. By integrating this technology with SBS Transit's proprietary intellectual property, this solution will combine intelligent asset management, near real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and reliability planning into one platform. The goal is to improve efficiency and support stronger decision-making in maintenance activities.
Improving Operational Efficiency with Generative AI
This collaboration allows SBS Transit to leverage advanced features of the IBM Maximo Application Suite, such as Manage and work order intelligence, powered by Watsonx technology. This enables SBS Transit’s engineers and technicians to access near real-time data and predictive insights, preventing potential operational disruptions before they occur.
This approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also reduces unplanned downtime. By using AI to identify the causes of train or equipment failures, the system enables faster and more accurate issue resolution. Technicians can be dispatched with the correct tools to address the problem with maximum efficiency.
Jeffrey Sim, Group CEO of SBS Transit, stated, “Every day, our team works hard to ensure a delightful journey for our passengers. This partnership allows us to strategically contribute to that focus. By leveraging generative AI technology, we can manage data smartly, improve rail reliability, and provide better service for our community.”
IBM’s Support for a More Reliable Public Transport System
Tan Siew San, General Manager and Technology Leader at IBM Singapore, noted that more than 4.7 billion passengers globally rely on IBM Maximo technology for smooth public transportation operations.
“Transport operators now require AI and analytics to efficiently monitor, manage, and maintain their assets. The transportation industry needs to proactively prevent issues and improve diagnostic accuracy. We are proud to support SBS Transit in building operational efficiencies through trusted AI technologies,” said Tan.
This collaboration also plays a significant role in supporting Singapore’s Smart Nation initiatives, with a focus on integrating cutting-edge technology into both public and private sectors.
Global Expansion of the Solution
In addition to supporting domestic operations, SBS Transit plans to extend this AI-based solution to rail projects overseas under its parent company, ComfortDelGro. With this move, SBS Transit aims to promote Singapore’s world-class public transportation system on a global scale.
As Singapore’s largest public transport operator, SBS Transit manages over 3,000 buses across 200 routes and a rail network spanning 83 kilometers with **79 stations.
Tangible Benefits for Commuters
The collaboration between SBS Transit and IBM is expected to deliver several tangible benefits to the public:
According to SBS Transit, the public transport network serves an average of 3.5 million passenger trips every day. With such high usage, improving operational efficiency is a key priority.
Digital Transformation with Sustainability Commitment
This partnership also aligns with Singapore’s sustainability efforts. IBM, a global provider of technology, is committed to sustainability by utilizing hybrid cloud technology and efficient AI solutions. This approach supports the reduction of carbon emissions and the optimization of energy use within transportation systems.
Moreover, the integration of these solutions is expected to become a model for other countries to develop AI-driven, reliable, and eco-friendly public transportation systems.
SBS Transit’s partnership with IBM to transform its public transportation system through digital innovation is a significant milestone in the Asia-Pacific transportation industry. By leveraging generative AI technology, SBS Transit not only enhances operational efficiency but also creates a more reliable and comfortable transport experience for millions of commuters.
This collaboration showcases how advanced technology can address operational challenges while promoting sustainability. SBS Transit and IBM have set a new standard for digital transformation in transportation, inspiring global change.
