Jakarta, INTI - Global cyber threats continue to rise, significantly impacting 340 million people due to 2,365 cyber incidents that occurred in 2023. Various types of attacks, such as phishing, malware, and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), pose serious threats to the digital ecosystem worldwide. In response to this situation, the Minister of Communication and Informatics, Budi Arie Setiadi, encourages the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology as a strategic measure to strengthen cybersecurity at the regional level.
At the ASEAN Cyber Resilience Forum: AI & Cognitive Warfare in Emerging Cyber Threats, held in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (September 24, 2024), Minister Budi Arie explained that the development of AI offers significant opportunities for quickly and accurately detecting cyber threats. "Governments in various countries, including those in the ASEAN region, have utilized AI to enhance cybersecurity," he stated.
AI technology offers various capabilities that can improve the accuracy of threat detection, analyze large amounts of data quickly, and identify and flag suspicious cyber activities. According to Budi Arie, countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand have implemented AI technology to support their cybersecurity efforts.
"In Malaysia, MyCERT has integrated AI to detect and respond to incidents, while in Singapore, GovTech uses AI in its cybersecurity operations center. The Thai government has also integrated AI into its local security systems to enhance connectivity," Budi Arie remarked.
Minister Budi Arie emphasizes the importance of developing an AI ecosystem in Indonesia to bolster cybersecurity and create a safe and productive digital space. He noted that there are still significant challenges related to the low level of public awareness regarding cybersecurity, particularly in regions far from urban centers.
"The digital gap between urban and rural areas, as well as surrounding regions, still needs improvement," he said. He stressed that all stakeholders must collaborate to conduct digital literacy programs for the community to create a more educated digital society.
"A digital society requires continuous literacy from all sectors of society," he asserted.
Minister Budi Arie also expressed appreciation to the Indonesian Cyber Security Forum and the United States Embassy for organizing this forum. He hopes this collaboration will strengthen the cybersecurity ecosystem in Indonesia, creating a safe, inclusive, and sustainable digital space.
"To realize a safe and productive digital environment, Indonesia's Digital Vision 2045 emphasizes three key aspects: inclusiveness, safety, and sustainability," he explained. The event was also attended by Kate Rebholz, Chargé d'Affaires ad Interim United States Mission to ASEAN, Slamet Aji Pamungkas, Deputy for Cybersecurity and Economic Cybersecurity at the National Cyber and Crypto Agency, and Ardi Sutedja, Chairman and Co-Founder of the Indonesian Cyber Security Forum (ICSF).
