San Jose, INTI — In a surprising announcement, AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) has declared that its President, Victor Peng, will retire effective August 30, 2024. Victor will remain on AMD’s executive team as an advisor to support the transition until his retirement date.

Victor Peng, a prominent figure in the technology world, has made significant contributions over his more than 40-year career. With extensive experience in defining and bringing to market products such as FPGAs, SoCs, GPUs, and high-performance CPUs, his impact on the semiconductor industry is undeniable.

Victor rejoined AMD in 2022 following the acquisition of Xilinx, where he spent the last 14 years as president, CEO, and board director. “Victor played a crucial role in integrating and scaling our embedded business and leading our company-wide AI strategy,” said AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. “Under his leadership, AMD became the #1 provider of FPGA and adaptive computing solutions in the industry. On behalf of the AMD Board, the executive leadership team, and the thousands of employees who have worked with him, I want to thank Victor for his outstanding leadership and wish him the best in his retirement.”

Victor Peng's Career Journey

Victor Peng began his career at AMD as Corporate Vice President of the graphics products group (GPG), where he played a key role in AMD’s central silicon engineering team supporting graphics, console game products, CPU chipsets, and consumer business units. Before that, he held various executive and engineering leadership roles at TZero Technologies, MIPS Technologies, SGI, and Digital Equipment Corp.

As President and CEO of Xilinx since January 2018, Peng rolled out plans for a transformation to address new markets with new technology, underpinned by the Adaptive Compute Acceleration Platform (ACAP). In his previous role as Chief Operating Officer, he managed global sales, product & vertical marketing, product development, and global operations & quality. He also led the definition, development, and product marketing of the company’s product portfolio, resulting in three consecutive generations of core product leadership and significant industry breakthroughs in integration and programming.

Peng holds four U.S. patents and serves on the Board of Directors of the Semiconductor Industry Association and KLA, a developer of industry-leading equipment and services for the electronics industry. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.

Leadership Transition at AMD

As part of the leadership transition, Senior Vice President of the Artificial Intelligence Group (AIG), Vamsi Boppana, will expand his current responsibilities to include the AMD Instinct™ data center AI accelerator business. Boppana, who joined Xilinx in 2008, is currently responsible for the development of company-wide AI software and ecosystems and AI hardware roadmaps. Meanwhile, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group, Salil Raje, will continue to lead AMD’s embedded business. Boppana and Raje will report to Dr. Lisa Su.

This transition marks a strategic step for AMD in strengthening its position as a leader in AI technology and adaptive computing. Amid increasing competition in the tech industry, AMD remains committed to innovation that pushes technological boundaries and delivers the best solutions for their customers.
