President Jokowi Emphasizes Collaboration and Dialogue as Key Principles of ASEAN Chairmanship
INTI,- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) of Indonesia has emphasized that Indonesia's principle as the ASEAN 2023 chairmanship is collaboration and cooperation with all parties.
The President made the statement after reviewing the simulation of the ASEAN leaders' arrival at the Komodo International Airport in Manggarai Barat, East Nusa Tenggara on Sunday (05/07/2023).
"The principle of Indonesia in the ASEAN chairmanship is collaboration and cooperation with anyone. And we also do not want ASEAN to be a proxy for anyone, a proxy for any country," said the President.
Furthermore, the President wants ASEAN to remain open and be able to cooperate with any country. In addition, he stressed the principle of dialogue in resolving any issues in ASEAN, including the Myanmar issue, which will also be one of the discussion points for ASEAN leaders at the 42nd ASEAN Summit.
"Yes, it will be specifically discussed. But our reference for Myanmar is still the five-point consensus, but it must be through dialogue because I think sanctions are not a solution," he said.
The President hopes that the conflict in Myanmar can be resolved soon. He emphasized three things related to the Myanmar issue, starting from stopping the violence to encouraging an active role from Myanmar in the dialogues.
"First, the violence must be stopped, immediately stopped. Secondly, humanitarian assistance must reach the people in Myanmar. Thirdly, dialogue - that is important - we want those who are active not only here but also in Myanmar to play an active role in the dialogues we conduct," he concluded. ***. Hans
