Bali, INTI – President Joko Widodo praised the 57-year partnership between Indonesia and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) during a bilateral meeting with ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum at the Bali International Convention Center (BICC) in Badung, Bali, on Monday, May 20, 2024. President Jokowi highlighted the collaboration's role in addressing various crises, including the post-pandemic economic recovery.
President Jokowi emphasized the need to enhance this cooperation, particularly in supporting Indonesia's energy transition efforts. He reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to achieving emission reduction targets and stressed that the energy transition process requires support from partner countries and international institutions like the ADB.
"I appreciate ADB's support for energy transition projects in Indonesia, including the early retirement of coal-fired power plants," stated President Jokowi.
The President also highlighted ADB's role in supporting Indonesia's energy transition projects, such as the early shutdown of coal-fired power plants. He invited other ADB members to invest in the development of Indonesia's new capital city, Nusantara.
Furthermore, President Jokowi reiterated Indonesia's commitment to contributing to the replenishment of the Asian Development Fund (ADF) 14, which has a positive impact on the Asia-Pacific region.
"Indonesia needs to play a larger role in ADB's leadership structure in the future," President Jokowi asserted, acknowledging the strategic role Indonesia has played and will continue to play in the region.
ADB President Asakawa responded positively to Indonesia's proposals and aspirations, affirming that ADB's support will continue in the collective effort to address regional challenges, including energy transition and sustainable infrastructure development.
President Jokowi was accompanied by Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, State Secretary Pratikno, and Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board Bahlil Lahadalia during the meeting.
