Bogor, INTI - President Joko Widodo welcomed Australian Governor-General David Hurley at the Bogor Presidential Palace in West Java on Friday, May 17, 2024. The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral relations, particularly through increasing people-to-people contact.

"Given his role as governor-general, our bilateral talks primarily aimed at strengthening people-to-people contact," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in a statement to the media following the welcoming ceremony.

Strengthening Language Education

A key focus of the discussion was the enhancement of language education. Indonesia aims to boost English language teaching, while Australia will enhance Indonesian language education. This initiative is expected to serve as a bridge to foster closer relations between the citizens of both countries.

"We believe that language will serve as an excellent bridge for our efforts to enhance people-to-people contact," added Marsudi.

Promoting Cultural and Educational Exchanges

Governor-General Hurley, a co-founder of the Indonesia-Australia Defence Alumni Association, has been actively involved in various initiatives such as youth exchanges and interfaith dialogues. The meeting also touched upon preparations for the second interfaith dialogue to be held in Australia later this year.

"We are preparing for the second interfaith dialogue in Australia this year, which was also discussed by the President," Marsudi explained.

Celebrating Diplomatic Milestones

Additionally, the meeting highlighted the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-Australia diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Australia relations. Both leaders expressed their commitment to further strengthening and deepening the connections between their citizens.

Looking Ahead

As Indonesia and Australia commemorate these significant diplomatic milestones, the commitment to fostering deeper people-to-people ties through language education and cultural exchanges remains a priority. Both countries look forward to continued collaboration and mutual growth in their bilateral relationship.
