INTI- President Joko Widodo highlighted that smelters serve as the foundation for Indonesia's future progress as an advanced nation. The Head of State mentioned that the presence of several smelter factories in the country would enhance Indonesia's competitiveness and shift the economy's reliance from consumption to production.
"These smelters are the foundation for us to become an advanced nation because we are shifting from relying on consumption to relying on production," stated President Jokowi during a media briefing after inspecting the smelter construction project of PT Freeport Indonesia in Gresik Regency, East Java, on Tuesday.
The President also encouraged integrating the production output from these smelter plants with other mining commodities scattered across various regions in Indonesia. This includes nickel in Sulawesi, bauxite in Bintan and West Kalimantan, tin in Bangka Belitung, and copper foil in Gresik.
"Thus, they will be integrated into EV batteries, lithium batteries, and further integrated into electric vehicles," said the President.
President Widodo expressed hope that the smelter construction project, which has reached 72 percent completion, will be finished by next year. "We expect everything to be completed before May 2024," emphasized the President.
Accompanying the President during the inspection were Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa, and President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia Tony Wenas. ***.Hans
