Jakarta, Indonesia — In its commitment to advancing the agro industry, the Ministry of Industry is prioritizing downstreaming policies, with a specific focus on commodities like spirulina (microalgae) and porang. This initiative aims to foster companies engaged in downstream activities, fostering collaboration with key stakeholders.

Director General of Agro Industry, Putu Juli Ardika, revealed that several companies have successfully produced Spirulina-based downstream products. These include superfood (supplements and coffee), superskin (facial masks), and supernature (feed). To expand market reach, collaborations with the feed industry are being explored.

PT Alga Biotechnology, located in Central Java, is one such company supported by the Ministry. Collaborating with the Food Technology Laboratory of the University of 17 August 1945 (UNTAG) Semarang, PT Alga Biotechnology is developing Spirulina-based biscuit products rich in protein, targeting the European market and aiming for 10% of the domestic market through partnerships with educational institutions.

On the porang front, CV Tri Mitra Agro Semarang, backed by the Ministry of Industry, has successfully exported chip-shaped porang to countries like China and Japan. The Ministry is supporting the company in diversifying its products, particularly focusing on improving glucomannan flour. Currently in the testing stage, the goal is to achieve a finer particle size (120-150 mesh) and a glucomannan content of 90%, up from the current 70%.

The Ministry's support extends to facilitating research collaborations, notably with IPB University, Bogor. Encouraging domestic use of glucomannan, the Ministry is organizing Business Matching to align specifications with industrial users. In a bid to expand market networks, collaborations between the porang processing industry and cosmetics companies for face masks are being explored.

"The Ministry of Industry is dedicated to nurturing these industries, ensuring continuous research and testing for optimal results," emphasized the Director General of Agro Industry. This strategic approach aligns with the Ministry's goal of driving economic growth through innovative agro industry practices.
