Jakarta, INTI - The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) continues to enhance its oversight of digital activities to protect the public from cyber threats. This effort includes not only developing regulations but also adopting digital technologies to safeguard data and prevent cyberattacks.
Deputy Minister of Kominfo, Nezar Patria, expressed appreciation for digital companies that comply with regulations and consumer protection mechanisms. He emphasized that protecting consumer data is crucial, especially amid the growing cybersecurity crisis affecting the financial services sector.
“We greatly appreciate companies that provide protection for consumer data. This is a significant step, as cybersecurity issues in financial services are becoming increasingly critical,” said Nezar Patria after attending the VIDA Executive Summit 2024 in South Jakarta on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
According to Nezar Patria, the impact of cyberattacks on digital businesses is substantial. The resulting financial losses are driving the government to continue developing a healthy and resilient digital ecosystem to withstand cyber threats.
“The Ministry of Kominfo is committed to working with the digital business ecosystem in Indonesia to improve both technological and regulatory aspects,” he added.
In his keynote address at the VIDA Executive Summit 2024, Nezar Patria explained that cyberattacks are not only happening in Indonesia but are also rising globally. According to the National Cyber Security Index 2023, Indonesia ranks 49th out of 176 countries in terms of cybersecurity.
“In the ASEAN region, Indonesia is among the top five. The National Cyber and Encryption Agency data shows hundreds of millions of cyberattacks on Indonesia each year, with 279 million attacks recorded in 2023, a 24% increase from the previous year,” Nezar Patria stated.
Besides cyberattacks, online fraud is also a significant issue. Nezar Patria noted that the Ministry of Kominfo has managed hundreds of thousands of complaints related to online fraud through the cekrekening.id service. “Cekrekening.id recorded 572 thousand complaints related to online fraud from 2017 to 2024, with online buying and selling fraud and fictitious investment scams being the most common types of fraud,” he explained.
To protect the digital ecosystem and prevent cybercrime, the Ministry of Kominfo has developed several regulations. “The Law No. 1 of 2024 on the Second Amendment to the Electronic Information and Transactions Law and Government Regulation No. 71 of 2019 on the Implementation of Electronic Systems and Transactions are part of the Indonesian government's efforts to manage electronic and digital activities more safely and reliably,” Nezar Patria concluded.
