Jakarta, WISATA - In the rapidly advancing digital era, the ability to independently develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology is key for Indonesia to maintain its digital sovereignty. Minister of Communication and Information Budi Arie Setiadi emphasized the importance of Sovereign AI as a primary strategy in protecting national interests amid the swift development of global technology.
During the event "Lintasarta Cloudeka Sovereign AI Empowering Indonesia's Future," held in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (August 21, 2024), Minister Budi Arie Setiadi stressed that Indonesia must take strategic steps to ensure that AI development aligns with national regulations and interests.
"We must ensure that the AI we develop is capable of protecting our sovereignty and national interests. Sovereign AI is a strategic step to ensure that this technology operates within the framework of our country's regulations and laws," said the Minister.
Minister Budi Arie revealed that the implementation of Sovereign AI has become a serious concern of the government, especially considering the projected private sector investment, which is estimated to reach USD 200 billion by 2025. This figure reflects how vital AI technology is in supporting Indonesia's economy and digital security.
Additionally, Budi Arie mentioned that total investment in technology integrated between AI and cloud computing by 2030 is expected to reach USD 397 billion. "This is proof of how important this technology is for the future of our economy and digital security," he emphasized.
The Minister added that cloud computing technology plays a central role in the development of Sovereign AI. According to him, cloud computing provides the infrastructure that allows for the efficient development and deployment of AI models without the need to build and manage physical data centers.
"The speed of access, processing, and secure data storage are critical factors in developing Sovereign AI," said Budi Arie.
However, he also reminded the audience that there are several challenges to be addressed in the development of cloud computing in Indonesia, such as differences in internet penetration levels across various regions, limited digital talent in cloud computing, and challenges in maintaining data security.
"To face these challenges, we need to develop a comprehensive cloud computing implementation strategy, improve national cloud infrastructure, and ensure that stringent cybersecurity standards are applied," he added.
Minister Budi Arie also encouraged collaboration between the public and private sectors to accelerate innovation and investment in cloud technology. This collaboration is expected to strengthen Indonesia's digital ecosystem and advance Sovereign AI as one of the key pillars toward a brighter digital future.
The event was also attended by Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, former Minister of Communication and Information for the 2014-2019 period Rudiantara, CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison Vikram Sinha, CEO of Lintasarta Bayu Hanantasena, and Head of Developer Program ASEAN and ANZ NVIDIA Deb Goswami.
