Geneva, INTI – At the WSIS 2024 Forum, Indonesian Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi, underscored the significance of empowering developing countries like Indonesia in the global digital technology supply chain. During his meeting with UNESCO representatives, Minister Budi Arie emphasized the need for Indonesia to be more than just a follower or user of technology.
In this discussion, the Indonesian government invited UNESCO to collaborate in enhancing accountable internet governance. Minister Budi Arie also called on UNESCO and other stakeholders to support the development of digital talent in Indonesia.
Representing UNESCO, Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, welcomed the key points raised by Minister Budi Arie. Gabriela stressed the importance of Indonesia's role in promoting AI governance and ethics.
Furthermore, Gabriela expressed hope that Indonesia would host the Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in 2025. The forum, held in Slovenia in February 2024, was attended by over 70 ministerial-level delegates and other key figures. UNESCO assured full support for the organization of the Global Forum.
UNESCO has also launched the Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) program in Indonesia. RAM is an assessment tool designed to help member states develop AI according to their national priorities.
Through detailed analysis, RAM will provide concrete recommendations for AI governance in Indonesia. The methodology includes a series of questions to gather information about a country's AI ecosystem, covering legal and regulatory, social and cultural, economic, scientific and educational, and technological and infrastructural dimensions.
Minister Budi Arie's participation in the WSIS 2024 Forum reflects Indonesia's commitment to strengthening its position in the global digital landscape and fostering ethical AI development.
