Geneva, INTI – Amid bilateral meetings and ministerial discussions at the WSIS 2024 Forum, Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi, took time to meet with Indonesian nationals residing in Geneva. The event, held at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations, WTO, and Other International Organizations in Geneva, began with a delightful luncheon featuring traditional Padang cuisine.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Febrian A. Ruddyard, welcomed Minister Budi Arie and his delegation alongside Deputy Permanent Representatives Achsanul Habib and Dandy Satria Iswara.

Around 50 Indonesians from various professional and educational backgrounds warmly greeted the Minister. The attendees utilized this opportunity to share experiences and discuss current issues in Indonesia.

During the friendly forum, Minister Budi Arie addressed numerous questions regarding technological advancements in Indonesia and regulatory policies in telecommunications in response to emerging trends like artificial intelligence and the disruption caused by Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. He emphasized that technological progress is relentless and inevitable, urging a positive and optimistic outlook. To prevent technology from negatively impacting society, the government must prioritize national sovereignty and ensure a level playing field and fair treatment for all industries.

Participants expressed their hopes for the Minister to promote information dissemination and the proliferation of Indonesian professionals abroad, especially in international organizations.

The Indonesian diaspora also praised the rapid technological developments and regulatory progress in Indonesia, such as the enactment of the Personal Data Protection Law, which is also a significant concern in European countries.

In his closing remarks, Minister Budi Arie thanked the Indonesian Ambassador and his team, as well as the Indonesian nationals present, for the warm reception. He expressed his hopes for stronger collaboration among the Indonesian diaspora to leverage all available resources towards a prosperous Indonesia by 2045.
