Jakarta, INTI - In a notable demonstration of economic solidarity, Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, and Japan's Foreign Minister, Yoko Kamikawa, convened for a crucial bilateral meeting during the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting (MCM) 2024 in Paris on May 2nd, 2024.
Minister Kamikawa initiated the meeting by warmly welcoming the adoption of the OECD’s Accession Roadmap for Indonesia and underscored Japan’s dedication to enhancing collaboration between the OECD and Southeast Asian nations, with Indonesia as a pivotal partner. Minister Kamikawa expressed confidence in Minister Hartarto’s leadership as the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, backed by broad political support, to advance this shared vision.
Addressing strategic issues central to the MCM 2024 theme, both ministers reiterated their commitment to leveraging the OECD’s global platform for cooperation in crafting resilient and well-coordinated policies. They emphasized the need for closer economic ties between Indonesia and Japan, focusing on labor, employment, skills, and education to address global challenges effectively.
Paving the way for mutual prosperity and collective advancement in the ever-evolving global economic landscape, both ministers agreed to expedite the signing schedule of the Protocol Amending the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA), following discussions between President Joko Widodo and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida late last year.
Minister Airlangga conveyed his gratitude for Japan’s steadfast support and eagerness for Indonesia’s accession process progress. Additionally, he sought Japan’s assistance within the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) framework to bolster market access.
This meeting not only cemented the groundwork for deeper economic collaboration but also marked a new phase in the enduring alliance between Indonesia and Japan. Against the backdrop of MCM 2024, Indonesia and Japan united in their commitment to spearhead objective, reliable, and sustainable global dialogues, aiming for inclusive growth and a brighter future for all.
