INTI,- Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) plans to optimize renewable energy sources, which are widely spread across different regions, through a super grid network and the Renewable Energy Based Industrial Development (REBID) program.

"Given Indonesia's uniqueness as an archipelagic country and to optimize widely spread renewable energy resources, the government plans to implement a modern and integrated super grid network and the REBID program," said Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Dadan Kusdiana, in Jakarta on Wednesday (10/5).

This strategic effort is being taken to accelerate the development of renewable energy to achieve the target of 23% renewable energy in the national energy mix by 2025 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

"We have several targets, which will be achieved through the optimization of the utilization of renewable energy for both supply and demand sides through electrification and energy efficiency. Indonesia has abundant, diverse, and widely spread renewable energy resources. So far, only 12.6 GW of it has been utilized, while the potential is more than 3,600 GW," said Dadan.

Furthermore, Dadan explained that the super grid program is aimed at enhancing the development of renewable energy, maintaining transmission stability and security, addressing the mismatch between renewable energy sources and high demand for electricity, and providing and expanding energy access.

Meanwhile, REBID is an effort to accelerate the utilization of large-scale renewable energy in areas that have abundant renewable energy resources and low energy demand. The program is carried out through "creating demand" to integrate regional and industrial development, attract investments, and enhance regional economic development.

"The program involves the integrated development of large-scale hydropower and geothermal power plants with industrial development, as well as synergy between renewable energy development and economic cluster development," said Dadan.

He added that this concept will be used for the first time in the development of the Green Industrial Park in North Kalimantan. The region, which is abundant with water resources, is the location of the Tanah Kuning Industrial Zone, which will host several new green industries such as renewable fuels, green hydrogen, new energy batteries, ternary cathodes, and green aluminum.

"If the REBID program is implemented, the required investment for interconnection can be reduced significantly. We need to emphasize that the transition to clean energy in developing countries will not only benefit the environment but also create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to poverty alleviation," concluded Dadan.
