Jakarta, INTI - In the past decade, Indonesia has seen a remarkable surge in internet speed, which has increased tenfold. In 2014, the average internet speed in Indonesia was just 2.5 Mbps. Fast forward ten years to 2024, and the average speed has reached 25 Mbps, marking a significant milestone in the country's digital transformation.
Indonesia's Minister of Communication and Informatics, Budi Arie Setiadi, emphasized that the momentum for this rapid advancement began when President Joko Widodo launched the 4G telecommunications service on the 1,800 MHz frequency nationwide. This milestone event took place on the afternoon of Friday, December 11, 2015, at the National Museum in Central Jakarta.
"The launch of 4G services nine years ago was a crucial step and a significant milestone in the evolution of digital technology in Indonesia," stated Minister Budi Arie during the launch of the documentary film "Derang Daring" at Theatre 3 Plaza Senayan XXI, Central Jakarta, on Friday (August 30, 2024).
Minister Budi Arie highlighted that the introduction of 4G technology has transformed the internet experience for the Indonesian population. With the presence of 4G LTE on the 1,800 MHz frequency, people in Indonesia now enjoy faster and more capable internet access compared to previous technologies.
"The 4G service has acted as a catalyst for driving a digital revolution that can accelerate the growth of the digital economy in our country," he added.
The minister explained that when President Joko Widodo launched 4G LTE at the National Museum nine years ago, he expressed his hope that the digital revolution would propel an economic revolution. This prediction has proven accurate, as Indonesia's digital economy has grown rapidly, demonstrating resilience and growth even in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the pandemic from 2020 to 2022, the digital sector in Indonesia experienced significant growth and played a vital role in maintaining the continuity of the nation's economy. "Connectivity became crucial, and all digital ecosystems played an essential role in providing this access to the community," said Minister Budi Arie.
He also emphasized the government's commitment to accelerating national digital transformation under President Joko Widodo's leadership, focusing on expanding internet access and enhancing digital infrastructure, especially in the Frontier, Outermost, and Remote areas (3T regions).
"We have observed the impact of internet availability in the 3T regions and how it has transformed the local economy and the lives of the community," he asserted.
Minister Budi Arie underscored that this achievement is the result of the hard work of all parties, including the government, industry, and other stakeholders. "This achievement is the foundation for the government to continue driving digital transformation, strengthening the economy, and preparing Indonesia to become a developed nation by 2045," he concluded.
During the launch of the documentary "Derang Daring," Minister Budi Arie was accompanied by Director General of Information and Public Communication, Prabunindya Revta Revolusi, and the Minister's Special Staff, Sarwoto. Also present were APJII Chairman Muhammad Arif Angga, Telkom Indonesia's Director of Digital Business Fajrin Rasyid, PANDI Chairman John Sihar Simanjuntak, Film Producer Fauzan Zidni, and Director Dodik.
