Jakarta, INTI - In recent years, Indonesia’s gaming industry has experienced rapid growth, making the country one of the largest markets in Southeast Asia. In 2023, Indonesia recorded over 150 million active gamers playing on various platforms, generating impressive revenue of more than USD 1.6 billion. These figures indicate that Indonesia is not just a consumer of games but is starting to shift towards becoming an innovative producer of digital content.
Hokky Situngkir, Director General of Informatics Applications (Aptika) at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, expressed great optimism for the future of Indonesia’s gaming industry. "We want to position Indonesia as the gaming hub in Southeast Asia, a place where talent is nurtured, creativity is celebrated, and opportunities abound," he said during the opening of the Indonesia Game Developer Exchange (IGDX) 2024 Conference in Bali.
The Growth of the Digital Ecosystem: Internet Access as a Key Driver
The growth of Indonesia’s gaming industry is supported by a rapidly expanding digital ecosystem. According to data from the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, 79.5% of Indonesia's population, or around 221.56 million people, are now connected to the internet. This connectivity has opened vast opportunities for game developers to reach global markets.
"Better connectivity has enabled Indonesian game developers to compete in the international market. Over 250 games from local developers are now available on global platforms such as Steam," Hokky Situngkir explained. With more Indonesian games appearing on global platforms, Indonesia is proving that its local talent can produce high-quality products.
IGDX 2024: Driving Growth and Innovation
The IGDX 2024 Conference has become a critical event in strengthening the gaming ecosystem in Indonesia. This event not only serves as a gathering for local game developers but also as a platform for them to learn from international experts and build strategic partnerships. Since its inception in 2021, IGDX has been one of the main events in Indonesia’s gaming industry.
Shafiq Husein, President of the Indonesian Game Association, stated that the Indonesian government has demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting the gaming industry’s growth through relevant regulations. "With Presidential Regulation No. 19 of 2024, we are seeing a faster development of the local gaming industry. This is one of the important steps to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global market," he said.
International Collaboration: Key to Boosting Competitiveness
Collaboration with international industry players is seen as one of the main factors that can accelerate the growth of Indonesia’s gaming industry. One of the significant collaborations is with France, which continues to support the development of the gaming industry in Indonesia through knowledge and experience exchange.
France's Ambassador to Indonesia, Fabien Penone, stated that France is ready to continue collaborating with Indonesia to drive the success of the gaming industry. "We hope this collaboration will bring more innovations from local game developers that can compete in the global market," said Penone.
Building Local Talent and Reaching Global Markets
One of the main focuses of IGDX is nurturing local talent to compete globally. Hans Saleh, Country Head of Garena Indonesia, stated that IGDX has become one of the most important platforms in promoting Indonesian game talent. "IGDX has become a place for local game developers to showcase their creativity and abilities on the international stage," said Hans.
With the continued growth of Indonesia’s gaming industry, many local developers are starting to create games that can compete with international products. Government support, private sector involvement, and international collaboration are key factors in realizing Indonesia's vision of becoming an innovative game producer in Southeast Asia.
Opportunities and Challenges Ahead
Indonesia has a tremendous opportunity to become a gaming development hub in Southeast Asia. With an increasing number of gamers, strong government support, and robust international collaboration, the future of Indonesia’s gaming industry looks promising. However, challenges such as global competition and the need for further development of digital infrastructure still need to be addressed.
As the gaming ecosystem continues to grow, Indonesia is ready to make its mark on the international stage as one of the main players in the gaming industry.
