Geneva, INTI – On Monday, May 27, 2024, Indonesian Minister of Communication and Informatics, Budi Arie Setiadi, continued his working visit to Geneva with a bilateral meeting with China's Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Shan Zhongde. This meeting followed an earlier discussion with Secretary General of the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), Deemah Al Yahya, both held at the Geneva International Convention Center (CICG).

Strengthening AI and Digital Economy Ties

During the meeting with Vice Minister Zhongde, Minister Budi Arie emphasized Indonesia's commitment to developing artificial intelligence (AI) and investing in human resources as a pathway to progress. He highlighted Indonesia's efforts to avoid the middle-income trap by advancing the digital economy and leveraging AI technology.

“Indonesia is confident that the development of AI and investment in human resources will lead to significant advancements. We already have ethical guidelines for AI utilization in place,” stated Minister Budi Arie.

He also expressed hope that China would support the development of digital infrastructure in Indonesia's remote areas. Minister Budi Arie announced plans for a working visit to Shanghai in June to further explore digital cooperation with China.

“We hope this meeting fosters better collaboration for mutual success,” he added.

Collaboration on Future Technologies

Vice Minister Zhongde reaffirmed China's support for Indonesia's digital transformation, particularly in the telecommunications sector, focusing on the development of 5G and 6G technologies as well as AI. He extended an invitation for Indonesia to send a delegation to an international forum on digital industry and AI in China, scheduled for early September this year.

“We look forward to collaborating on AI utilization for the advancement of our peoples,” said Vice Minister Zhongde.

Delegations in Attendance

Minister Budi Arie was accompanied by Director General of Post and Informatics Operations Wayan Toni, President Director of Bakti Kominfo Fadhilah Mathar, and Special Staff members Sarwoto Atmosutarno, Daniel Hutagalung, Jobpie Sugiharto, and Dedy Permadi. Vice Minister Zhongde was supported by a nine-member delegation from the Chinese government.
