Geneva, INTI – Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi, accompanied by Febrian A. Ruddyard, Indonesia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office, World Trade Organization, and other international organizations in Geneva, met with Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The meeting focused on several strategic issues within the ITU's scope of work.
One of the key topics discussed was Indonesia's plan to develop Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. Minister Budi Arie emphasized the importance of this initiative, highlighting that Indonesia aims to not only be a user but also a competitive developer of LEO satellites on a global scale. To achieve this, Indonesia would need to file for the use of Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) slots for equatorial orbit.
Minister Budi Arie discussed the potential for cooperation with the ITU to realize this ambitious plan. Secretary-General Bogdan-Martin warmly welcomed the initiative, affirming that Indonesia could proceed with the necessary registration processes in accordance with existing procedures. She also expressed openness to building further collaborations between ITU and Indonesia. Potential areas of cooperation include capacity building, utilizing various substantive forums, and expert support.
The meeting underscored the ongoing and future collaboration between Indonesia and the ITU. Minister Budi Arie expressed high appreciation for the continued partnership, while Secretary-General Bogdan-Martin also lauded the productive cooperation and looked forward to expanding it.
