Jakarta, INTI – Indonesia has made history by becoming the first country in ASEAN to successfully complete the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Readiness Assessment through the Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM)-AI developed by UNESCO. This achievement opens significant opportunities for the comprehensive development of the AI landscape and ecosystem in the country.
The Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics, Nezar Patria, stated that the implementation of the RAM-AI UNESCO is expected to have a positive impact on job opportunities across various sectors, including transportation, education, and healthcare. “Through this RAM, we can see institutional readiness and the social and economic impacts of AI implementation across sectors,” he said after receiving the RAM-AI report in South Jakarta.
Opportunities and Challenges in the AI Era
The application of AI technology in Indonesia must consider the readiness of the digital infrastructure that has been built. According to Nezar, the government needs to prepare to support the growth of AI usage. "We see the importance of the existing digital infrastructure to support AI development," he emphasized.
However, not all sectors are ready to adapt quickly. The RAM-AI UNESCO report highlights a special focus on developing digital human resources. Nezar Patria revealed a gap in knowledge and skills among civil society. “There is massive growth in AI implementation in the industrial sector, but in civil society, we are still facing knowledge and skills gaps,” he explained.
Long-Term Strategies for AI Readiness
The Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics emphasized the Ministry's commitment to continually study the RAM-AI document as a foundation for developing five-year programs. "We are focusing on digital literacy so that the community can adopt more aspects of AI development and understand its socio-economic impacts," he said.
The development of AI technology has also been included in the Vision of Indonesia Digital 2045 document. “The transition of government from President Jokowi to the elected President Prabowo Subianto will continue the programs and policies that have been in place. This has become part of the ministry's documentation,” said Nezar.
Global Assessment and Future Plans
The RAM-AI UNESCO has been implemented by 60 member countries, and Indonesia is the first in ASEAN to apply the recommendations. According to Nezar, this assessment is a strategic step in building ethical and inclusive AI governance. “The completion of RAM-AI in Indonesia is a good achievement as an encouragement to create a more comprehensive AI development landscape,” he concluded.
With various measures being taken, Indonesia is expected to lead AI development in the ASEAN region and set an example for other countries in implementing ethical and inclusive technology.
