Jakarta, INTI – Indonesia has once again demonstrated its commitment to addressing the global climate change challenge by supporting 34 energy transition projects as part of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC). These projects were a key focus during the 2nd AZEC Ministerial Meeting held in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, coinciding with the launch of the Asia Zero Emission Center.
Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, during a doorstop session following the meeting, explained that Indonesia has the largest project list among AZEC member countries. Of the 78 projects that will receive funding from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), 34 are from Indonesia. These projects are expected to accelerate energy transition across the Asian region, with a focus on the development of renewable energy and sustainability.
"These projects are initiatives led by Indonesia and Japan to accelerate the energy transition in Asia. We encourage this transition to proceed smoothly while ensuring that economic and environmental sustainability is maintained," said Minister Airlangga.
The establishment of the Asia Zero Emission Center is also a strategic step to support these energy transition projects. The center will play a crucial role in assisting AZEC member countries in designing and implementing sustainable energy transition policies and projects.
Moreover, Minister Airlangga highlighted the importance of this meeting as a forum for Asian countries to share experiences and develop joint strategies in tackling the climate change challenge. Indonesia, as one of the countries with the largest energy transition projects, is committed to continuously promoting innovation and collaboration in achieving zero-emission targets.
The meeting was also attended by Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, Ken Saito, who expressed Japan's full support for the energy transition projects in Asia. According to him, the collaboration between Indonesia and Japan serves as a model that other countries can emulate in pursuing future sustainability.
Minister Airlangga added that the Asia Zero Emission Center will become a knowledge and innovation hub that will significantly contribute to realizing the zero-emission vision in the Asian region. With the support of stakeholders, the center will be the driving force behind the implementation of energy transition projects across various sectors.
The establishment of the Asia Zero Emission Center and support for these energy transition projects underscores Indonesia's strong commitment to addressing the climate crisis. Minister Airlangga emphasized the importance of international cooperation in achieving a sustainable and climate-resilient future.
