Bali, INTI - As the global climate crisis intensifies, key sectors essential for livelihoods are being significantly impacted. Amidst these challenges, Indonesia stands out for its vast mangrove forests, which account for about 23 percent of the world's total, spanning 3.44 million hectares and encompassing 204 species. Mangroves are extraordinary trees that serve as guardians of Indonesia’s archipelago. This sentiment was echoed by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut B. Pandjaitan, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the International Mangrove Research Center MBZ-JKW in Kura Kura, Bali on Sunday, May 19, 2024. Today, Minister Luhut, along with distinguished guests, will lay the foundation stone for the center.

Strengthening Mangrove Ecosystems Through International Cooperation

"Regarding the urgency of protecting mangrove ecosystems, the Indonesian government and the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to co-chair the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC) and establish the Mohammed Bin Zayed - Joko Widodo International Mangrove Research Center (IMRC) in Indonesia," said Minister Luhut.

These initiatives highlight the importance of international cooperation in tackling climate challenges, fostering collaboration, and strengthening ties between Indonesia and the UAE in sustainable mangrove management. "I am proud to announce that the International Mangrove Research Center will be established in a highly strategic location in Bali, which has proven successful in preserving mangrove ecosystems and will serve as an international showcase. The land for the research center has been provided by the Indonesian government," added Minister Luhut.

Cutting-Edge Research and Conservation Efforts

The research center will focus on advanced research, conservation, and education, particularly utilizing biotechnology and innovations such as artificial intelligence for mangrove identification and drones for restoration in remote areas.

"Tomorrow, we will hold a high-level event for the Global Blue Forest Alliance (GBFA) G20 Bali at the 10th World Water Forum. The event will include the launch of the Secretariat headquartered in Bali, the signing of the Letter of Intent by the founders, and a Roundtable Discussion to discuss the next steps," Minister Luhut stated.

A Global Hub for Research and Innovation

Minister Luhut emphasized that this initiative is not merely a construction project but will evolve into a cutting-edge research center, enhancing capacity and becoming an international destination in Bali.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in global efforts to combat climate change and underscores Indonesia’s commitment to preserving its rich mangrove ecosystems. The collaboration with the UAE and the establishment of the International Mangrove Research Center reflect the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.
