INTI, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, recently held a crucial meeting with Elon Musk, the owner of Starlink, the revolutionary satellite network. This meeting signifies an effort to explore potential cooperation aimed at providing better internet access to community health centers (puskesmas) located in remote, frontline, and outermost (3T) regions of Indonesia.
"This is a strategic step to ensure equitable and equal healthcare services across the country. Community health centers, as the frontline providers of healthcare, must have adequate infrastructure," said Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
This collaboration aims to assist 3T region community health centers, which often face difficulties in obtaining adequate internet access. With reliable internet connectivity, these centers can enhance healthcare services, enable remote consultations, and improve medical data management.
However, the domestic telecommunications industry has expressed concerns about Starlink's entry into Indonesia. The President Director and CEO of XL Axiata, Dian Siswarini, stated that the industry faces significant challenges in maintaining sustainability.
"When foreign companies like Starlink want to operate in Indonesia, we hope that the applicable regulations will be the same for everyone. If foreign companies receive special treatment or are exempt from the rules, it could harm local businesses," she said.
The concept of a "level playing field" is crucial in this context. This means the government must ensure that telecommunications regulations apply equally to both local and foreign industries. This is necessary to ensure the sustainability of domestic businesses and prevent imbalances that could harm the local industry.
Dian Siswarini emphasized that the government should act as a catalyst to maintain the sustainability of domestic businesses. Currently, the challenge to achieve a balance in the playing field remains significant, making business sustainability difficult.
The collaboration between the Indonesian government and Elon Musk's Starlink will be closely monitored, with a focus on the importance of maintaining fair regulations and sustainability in the national telecommunications industry.
