Jakarta – The Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenperin) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have formed a strategic partnership to advance the development of the electric vehicle (EV) industry. This collaboration is manifested through a comprehensive survey on electric motorcycles in Indonesia.

The survey aims to understand the demand and supply challenges related to electric motorcycles (e-bikes) in Indonesia, aligning with the national automotive industry roadmap. As part of this initiative, the JICA held a final seminar titled "Data Collection Survey on the Promotion of the Electric Motorcycle Industry and Strengthening of the Supply Chain in Indonesia" on May 29, 2024. "This seminar aims to discuss key findings from the survey, which is part of a project carried out from May 2023 to July 2024," said Ignatius Warsito, Expert Staff to the Minister for Strengthening Domestic Industry Capabilities, in Jakarta on Wednesday (June 5).

The Indonesian government has set a target to increase the number of e-bikes in the country to 4.5 million units per year, equivalent to 30% of total two-wheeler sales by 2035. This goal is driven by Indonesia's commitment to promote domestic e-bike usage and position the country as a hub for the sale and production of key components, such as batteries, in Southeast Asia.

"This effort is supported by plans to build 32,000 public charging/exchange stations by 2030, as well as offering attractive incentives for e-bike owners, such as reduced electricity tariffs and tax breaks," added Warsito.

The rapid development of the EV industry in Indonesia is expected to create new jobs, reduce the environmental impact of conventional motor vehicle use, and establish Indonesia as a major player in the e-mobility industry in Southeast Asia.

"The collaboration between Kemenperin and JICA is expected to be a crucial step in driving economic growth, innovation, and technological transformation in Indonesia," Warsito concluded.
