Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia holds significant potential to become a global hub for the electric vehicle (EV) battery industry, thanks to its abundant reserves of critical minerals like nickel, which is a key material in lithium-ion battery production. To boost national economic growth through increased EV production and sales, the government has offered a variety of attractive incentives.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto expressed his optimism about electric vehicle policies while attending the international automotive exhibition GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2024 at ICE BSD on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. "The number of electric car options is increasing, and prices are becoming more affordable. So, this certainly encourages the belief that electric car policies are quite good and have received a positive public response," he said.
Great Enthusiasm at GIIAS 2024
The GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2024 is the 31st automotive exhibition organized by GAIKINDO. This year's event has significantly expanded to include 11 halls covering a total area of 120,000 m2. With over 55 participating brands, GIIAS 2024 showcases a wide range of the latest products, from gasoline-powered vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs).
The exhibition has attracted significant attention from various automotive industry stakeholders. Coordinating Minister Airlangga mentioned that the government has issued several incentives to accelerate the investment and implementation of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) in Indonesia, including luxury tax (PPnBM) incentives for four-wheeled BEVs. Additionally, incentives for hybrid cars are also being prepared.
Largest Sales Transaction
While touring the exhibition area, Coordinating Minister Airlangga witnessed the largest sales transaction at GIIAS 2024, achieved by Wuling with a value of around Rp30 billion. Through GIIAS, the automotive industry has the space to continue showcasing its superior products and innovating with the latest technologies. Additionally, GIIAS features various vehicles with a domestic component content of up to 80%.
Government and Industry Support
The visit was attended by several high-ranking officials, including GAIKINDO Chairman Yonannes Nangoi, Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Susiwijono Moegiarso, Deputy for Coordination of Food and Agribusiness Dida Gardera, Deputy for Coordination of Trade and Industry Ali Murtopo Simbolon, Special Staff of the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, and GAIKINDO Chairman of the Exhibition and Vice Chairman III Rizwan Alamsjah.
