Jakarta, INTI - On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto held a pivotal bilateral meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House in Washington, D.C. This visit, part of President Prabowo’s official working tour in the United States, marks a significant step in strengthening the long-standing diplomatic ties between Indonesia and the United States. The two leaders discussed a wide range of strategic issues, underscoring their commitment to a robust and enduring partnership.

President Prabowo’s arrival at the White House was marked by a ceremonial welcome that exemplified the close bond between the two nations. Escorted by his presidential convoy, Prabowo entered through the North West gate, greeted by an honor guard holding flags representing all 50 U.S. states. This display highlighted the mutual respect and camaraderie between Indonesia and the United States, signaling a warm and dignified start to this historic meeting. Upon arriving at the West Wing Portico, Prabowo was welcomed by Acting Chief of Protocol for the U.S., Ethan Rosenzweig.

Diplomatic Formalities and Preparations

President Prabowo began his visit with a ceremonial signing of the White House guestbook in the Roosevelt Room. This tradition underscores the respect and honor extended to foreign dignitaries visiting the United States. After completing this formality, Prabowo proceeded to the Oval Office, where he was received by President Biden. The two leaders exchanged a firm handshake and smiles, setting a positive tone for their high-level discussions.

Several high-ranking officials from both sides attended the meeting, highlighting the importance of this engagement. Accompanying President Prabowo were Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. From the U.S. side, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Kamala Lakhdir, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Dan Kritenbrink, and Senior Director for East Asia and Oceania Mira Rapp-Hooper were present.

Strategic Issues on the Agenda

During their discussions, Presidents Prabowo and Biden addressed a range of issues critical to both nations. The conversation centered on strengthening economic ties, enhancing security cooperation, promoting clean energy, and supporting democratic values. As two large and diverse democracies, Indonesia and the United States recognize the importance of fostering cooperation to address global challenges and ensure regional stability.

Economic Cooperation and Trade Growth

One of the main topics was expanding trade and investment between Indonesia and the United States. The two leaders acknowledged the complementary nature of their economies, with Indonesia being a leading exporter of agricultural products, textiles, and electronics, and the United States providing high-tech goods, healthcare products, and energy solutions.

According to recent data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade, bilateral trade between the two countries reached $37.7 billion in 2023, an 8% increase over the previous year. Both leaders are optimistic about achieving a $50 billion trade target in the next five years. To achieve this goal, they agreed to streamline trade processes, encourage mutual investments, and facilitate business exchanges. A particular focus is on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia to access the U.S. market.

The U.S. remains a vital partner in driving economic growth in Indonesia. Recent economic data indicates that American investments in Indonesia have been rising, especially in sectors such as technology, healthcare, and infrastructure. The meeting’s outcomes are expected to boost confidence in the stability of economic relations, creating new opportunities for Indonesian entrepreneurs in the U.S. market.

Security and Defense Cooperation

Another significant area of discussion was security and defense collaboration. As a vital partner in the Indo-Pacific, Indonesia is committed to maintaining regional security, particularly in maritime zones. With its strategic geographic location, Indonesia plays a crucial role in safeguarding regional stability and ensuring safe maritime routes for international trade. Both countries agreed to enhance their defense cooperation, including joint military exercises, naval patrols, and technology exchanges for maritime security.

Cybersecurity is another shared concern. With the rising number of cyber threats worldwide, the two countries see the value in deepening their cybersecurity partnership. Both leaders underscored the need to bolster cybersecurity measures and share best practices to prevent cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. Joint initiatives are planned to develop a stronger cybersecurity infrastructure and protocols, promoting a more resilient digital environment for both nations.

Energy Transition and Environmental Sustainability

President Biden also underscored the urgency of addressing climate change and promoting clean energy. With Indonesia aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, both countries have a shared interest in pursuing sustainable energy initiatives. Indonesia’s vast natural resources and commitment to clean energy align with the U.S. objective of reducing global carbon emissions.

The United States offered support in technology and funding for renewable energy projects in Indonesia, such as geothermal, solar, and wind energy. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Indonesia’s renewable energy sector could create approximately 1.3 million jobs by 2030. With American backing, Indonesia hopes to accelerate its transition to renewable energy and contribute significantly to the global fight against climate change.

Commitment to Transparency and Anti-Corruption

During the meeting, President Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to transparency and anti-corruption efforts. He emphasized that good governance and accountability are essential pillars of sustainable economic development. “Corruption undermines development and prosperity. We are committed to eradicating it for a stronger Indonesia,” Prabowo stated. This sentiment resonated with the U.S. administration, which views anti-corruption as a crucial aspect of a sustainable partnership.

Anti-corruption reforms and transparency measures are anticipated to create a more favorable business environment, attracting further foreign investment and solidifying Indonesia’s image as a reliable and transparent partner. The United States has committed to supporting these initiatives through technical assistance and collaborative projects focused on governance and institutional reform.

The Future of U.S.-Indonesia Relations

The bilateral meeting highlighted the optimism surrounding the U.S.-Indonesia relationship, with both countries setting ambitious goals for the future. This strengthened partnership is expected to yield positive outcomes, from economic growth and job creation to enhanced security and environmental protection. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, over 70% of Indonesians view the United States as a valuable partner in economic development and regional security. This public support serves as a foundation for the continued collaboration between the two nations.

Furthermore, foreign direct investment from the U.S. in Indonesia is expected to grow by 15% in 2025, driven by interest in Indonesia’s energy, healthcare, and technology sectors. As part of the collaboration, the United States and Indonesia plan to launch a joint economic task force to facilitate ongoing discussions, monitor progress, and identify new opportunities for cooperation.

President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to the United States and his meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House underscore the commitment of both countries to fostering a dynamic and mutually beneficial partnership. From economic and security cooperation to environmental and governance goals, this meeting marks a new chapter in the U.S.-Indonesia relationship. With support from both the Indonesian and American people, the collaboration between these two influential nations is poised to bring about long-lasting positive changes for both countries and beyond.
