Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia, with its vast and diverse geographical landscape, faces significant challenges in ensuring equitable internet access for all its citizens. In efforts to bridge the digital divide, the Indonesian government has initiated various programs to enhance internet access and 4G network deployment in remote areas. Recent data from the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) highlights significant progress in these initiatives.

Internet Access Locations

One strategic step taken by the government is the development of internet access locations across the country. By 2024, a total of 14,418 internet access points have been established in various regions. These access points utilize fiber optic, radio link, VSAT, and WiFi technologies to ensure reliable and fast connectivity.

Of the total access points, 6,062 are specifically developed for the educational sector. This reflects the government's commitment to supporting education by providing adequate internet access. The remaining 8,356 access points are allocated to other sectors that also require internet connectivity, such as healthcare, public administration, and community services.

4G BTS Deployment in 3T Areas

In addition to providing internet access points, the government is also focusing on the deployment of 4G Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) in the Terdepan, Terluar, and Tertinggal (3T) areas. The deployment of these 4G BTS aims to enhance cellular and internet network quality in underserved regions.

The target for 4G BTS deployment, after corrections in December 2023, is 6,547 locations. As of December 10, 2023, the realization progress reached 6,025 locations, or about 92% of the set target. Although this progress is significant, there are still 522 locations pending realization, which are expected to be completed soon.

Challenges and Opportunities

These achievements are not without challenges. Difficult-to-reach infrastructure, challenging geographical conditions, and resource limitations are some of the main obstacles. However, with technological advancements and government policy support, these challenges are being gradually addressed.

Providing internet access and 4G networks in remote areas opens up significant opportunities for economic and social development. Internet access allows communities in 3T areas to access information, improve education, and expand business opportunities. In the agriculture sector, for example, farmers can utilize the internet to access market information, weather forecasts, and the latest farming techniques.

Government and Service Provider Support

The Indonesian government continues to strive to enhance internet access through various digital infrastructure development programs. The Palapa Ring project, aimed at connecting all regions of Indonesia with a fiber optic network, is one of the major initiatives that has made a significant impact.

Additionally, internet service providers play a crucial role in supporting government initiatives. Investments in network expansion, offering affordable service packages, and educating the public about safe and productive internet usage are some of the steps taken by service providers to increase internet penetration across Indonesia.

The Digital Future of Indonesia

With the expanding internet access and 4G network deployment, Indonesia is expected to realize its vision of being a country with equitable digital connectivity. Increasing internet access in remote areas will not only reduce the digital divide but also promote more inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

To support this development, the Indonesia Internet Expo and Summit 2024 within the Indonesia Technology and Innovation (INTI-2024) will serve as the ideal platform to witness the latest innovations in technology and the internet. INTI is the largest exhibition and conference related to technology and innovation in Indonesia. Join and register to get the latest information and participate in the event.
