Jakarta, WISATA - Indonesia’s Vice President Ma'ruf Amin made an important call for multilateralism and global peace at the 19th East Asia Summit, held on October 11, 2024, in Vientiane, Laos. During this summit, Ma'ruf Amin highlighted the pressing global challenges and how the East Asia Summit must play an active role in addressing various conflicts affecting the Indo-Pacific region's stability.

East Asia Summit: A Collective Effort for Stability

The forum brings together major countries such as China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia, the United States, and ASEAN countries in a dialogue aimed at strengthening regional cooperation. As a key dialogue platform for leaders, the East Asia Summit plays a crucial role in managing political and security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.

Geopolitical issues, including tensions in the South China Sea, the situation in Myanmar, and conflicts on the Korean Peninsula, were the main topics of discussion. Leaders also addressed the conditions in Ukraine and the Middle East, including the escalation of the conflict in Palestine.

Ma'ruf Amin: The World is Not in Good Shape

Vice President Ma'ruf Amin remarked in his speech that the world is facing serious threats, both politically and in terms of security. "The world is not in good shape," he said. He added that the increase in distrust between countries is making it harder to establish constructive cooperation to address global crises.

One of the key issues Ma'ruf Amin addressed was the situation in Palestine. He expressed concern over the injustices experienced by the Palestinian people and the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank. “As leaders, we must be firm in upholding international law and human rights without discrimination,” said Ma'ruf Amin.

Dialogue to Strengthen Mutual Trust

Aside from Palestine, Ma'ruf Amin urged the importance of strengthening the culture of dialogue to manage regional tensions. In his view, multilateral dialogue is the most effective way to reduce tensions and prevent larger conflicts. He emphasized that the East Asia Summit should be the main platform for strengthening communication between countries and building mutual trust.

The ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) was cited as an ideal framework for fostering collaboration and addressing challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. Through AOIP, Ma'ruf Amin hopes the East Asia Summit will continue promoting lasting peace and stability.

Halal Market Potential and Regional Economic Cooperation

Vice President Ma'ruf Amin also highlighted the vast potential of the global halal market, which can be optimized through economic cooperation in the region. He pointed out that the increasing demand for halal products, from food and beverages to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, presents a great opportunity for ASEAN and its dialogue partners to expand markets and strengthen regional economies.

In addition, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, emphasized that amidst global trade wars and protectionism, the East Asia Summit can serve as a bridge to realize the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). This is seen as crucial for maintaining economic resilience in the region amidst global market turmoil.

Conclusion

The 19th East Asia Summit successfully reinforced ASEAN's role as a central actor in maintaining peace in the Indo-Pacific region. Through multilateralism and strong dialogue, the summit's leaders committed to addressing global challenges together and creating an environment conducive to economic development and regional stability.
