Exploring Manufacturing and Technology Investment Opportunities with Indonesia Apple Collaboration

Jakarta, INTI - Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita conveyed that Apple plans to add a fourth Apple Developer Academy as an investment in Indonesia. President Joko Widodo received a delegation from Apple at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. The meeting focused on exploring Apple's strategic plans, including opportunities for Apple's expansion in Indonesia and deeper integration into the global supply chain.

"Earlier, Mr. President and we received Apple CEO, Mr. Tim Cook, to discuss various strategic plans of Apple in Indonesia and also how Indonesia can become part of the global supply chain," said Minister of Communication and Informatics (Menkominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi in a press statement after the meeting.

Meanwhile, Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita conveyed that Apple plans to add a fourth Apple Developer Academy as an investment in Indonesia. Currently, there are three Apple Developer Academies located in Surabaya, Batam, and Tangerang.

"They announced yesterday that they will add one more facility in Bali. And actually, these four Apple Developer Academy facilities are based on the agreement between Indonesia and Apple," said Menperin.

In the meeting, Menperin stated that President Jokowi also urged Apple to establish manufacturing plants domestically. Menperin mentioned that several Apple device components are already available in Indonesia.

"After this, the Ministry of Industry will conduct a business matching process, we already have a list of components, components of cellphones that have been produced in Indonesia that we can match, it's called business matching," he said.

Furthermore, Menperin mentioned that the Head of State invited Apple to establish an innovation center in collaboration with the best universities in Indonesia for human resource development.

"This is also something that Tim Cook is very eager to follow up. Many discussions were also held on how we can develop human resources or human development in Indonesia through Apple," he said.

At the same event, CEO Apple Tim Cook expressed his delight with the performance of the existing three Apple Developer Academies in Indonesia.

"We are opening the fourth Apple Developer Academy. We just announced it yesterday, it will be in Bali. We are very pleased with their performance, which has graduated thousands of people and has been able to create applications for the App Store that are not only interesting domestically but also internationally. Therefore, we are very happy," said Tim Cook.

Furthermore, Tim Cook stated that they will consider President Jokowi's request for the construction of Apple manufacturing plants in Indonesia. He also assessed that Indonesia is an important market for Apple and has many good investment potentials.

"I think the investment potential in Indonesia is endless. I think there are many great places to invest in and we are investing. We believe in this country," he said.
