Jakarta, INTI - At the end of August 2024, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Airlangga Hartarto, made a working visit to Vancouver, Canada. This visit is part of the Indonesian government's efforts to strengthen economic, trade, and investment cooperation with Canada, particularly in British Columbia, a region geographically closer to the Asia-Pacific.
Minister Airlangga's visit began with a meeting with Indonesian Entrepreneurs, Diaspora, Community, and Students in Vancouver. The event was organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Vancouver in collaboration with the Indonesia Trade Promotion Center (ITPC). The meeting brought together various parties, including companies and business associations owned and operated by Indonesian Entrepreneurs in Vancouver, as well as representatives from the Canada-Indonesia Chamber of Commerce (West Coast Canada Chapter) and Indonesian students.
In his speech, Minister Airlangga shared his views on the global economy and the development of Indonesia's economy. He emphasized that, despite the challenging global situation, Indonesia has maintained strong economic growth thanks to increasing competitiveness, controlled inflation, and improving growth quality.
Minister Airlangga also addressed several strategic issues that will pose challenges for Indonesia's economy in the future, including the Demographic Bonus, efforts to escape the Middle-Income Trap, the energy transition towards renewable energy, the digital economy, and industrial downstreaming. In the digital economy sector, Indonesia has proven to be a key player in ASEAN, with the number of innovative start-ups placing it sixth in the world.
Additionally, Minister Airlangga outlined Indonesia's international economic cooperation map, covering various multilateral, regional, and regional partnerships, including Indonesia's efforts to join the CP-TPP and the OECD accession process. On this occasion, he also explained the formation of a National Team to accelerate Indonesia's OECD accession process.
From the Indonesian Diaspora, Luthfi Doffier and Matthew Riyanto of the Canada-Indonesia Chamber of Commerce expressed their support for the government's efforts and inquired about the role they could play in enhancing cooperation with Canada. They also highlighted the importance of efficient logistics to support Indonesian agro products, which often face over-supply issues, as pointed out by Monica Khoe of Indigo Prima.
Minister Airlangga's visit to Vancouver will continue with his participation in the Business Forum organized by KJRI and ITPC on September 3, 2024. This forum is expected to encourage entrepreneurs and potential investors in Canada to invest in Indonesia, thereby strengthening the economic ties between the two countries.
