Jakarta, INTI - Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics (Wamenkominfo) Nezar Patria emphasized the importance of applying ethics in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology so that the resulting innovations can provide appropriate solutions without neglecting moral responsibility. This statement was delivered in his speech at the UI Integrity Zone Award 2024 event at the University of Indonesia Auditorium, Depok, West Java, on Thursday (August 29, 2024).

"AI has become a key catalyst for innovation, especially in academic research and development. However, we must adhere to ethical principles to ensure that AI is used in a proper and responsible manner," Nezar Patria said before the academics and technology practitioners in attendance.

According to him, AI has transformed many aspects of the digital and educational world. Its economic potential is vast, even predicted to contribute up to USD 15 trillion to the global economy by 2030. For Indonesia, with its rapidly growing digital economy, AI is projected to add USD 366 billion to the economy.

However, alongside these bright prospects, Nezar Patria reminded that AI also brings potential threats if not used ethically. One of his main concerns is the risk of plagiarism and intellectual property rights violations in academic environments. "AI can be an extraordinary tool if used correctly, but we must always be vigilant against the risks and biases that may arise," he said.

As a concrete step, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics has issued Circular No. 9 of 2023 on Artificial Intelligence Ethics. This guideline contains nine fundamental principles that must be followed by AI developers and users in Indonesia. Nezar emphasized that this regulation is necessary to ensure that AI-driven innovations remain within the right ethical boundaries.

Moreover, the Deputy Minister also highlighted the importance of stronger regulations to anticipate the impact of AI across various sectors, including education and healthcare. He invited all parties to work together in building a future that balances technological innovation with ethical values.

"Let us work together to shape a future where technological innovation aligns with ethical values, thereby becoming a sustainable and fair solution for shared progress," Nezar urged.

At the end of the event, Deputy Minister Nezar Patria presented an award to the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Indonesia, which won first place in the UI Integrity Zone Award 2024.
