Jakarta, INTI – In this era of rapidly advancing technology, the existence of inclusive, fair, and sustainable digital platform governance has become a crucial issue. Minister of Communication and Informatics (Menkominfo), Budi Arie Setiadi, during a UNESCO workshop held in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (18/09/2024), emphasized the importance of strengthening national digital platform governance to create a safe, productive, and empowering digital space.

"In this digital era, we need strong governance to protect freedom of expression and the right to information. Therefore, cross-sector collaboration is crucial," said Budi Arie.

By adopting a multistakeholder approach, this governance aims not only to create an inclusive digital ecosystem but also to promote the positive and productive use of the internet.

UNESCO's Digital Governance Guidelines: Pillars for a More Inclusive Future

UNESCO has developed Digital Platform Governance Guidelines that consist of five key principles: human rights due diligence, adherence to international human rights standards, transparency, accessibility of information, and accountability. These five principles serve as an important foundation for developing a healthy and safe digital ecosystem.

Budi Arie stated that these principles could serve as strong references for Indonesia in drafting relevant digital platform governance, tailored to the needs and challenges of developing countries like Indonesia. "We need to ensure that digital platforms comply with international human rights standards. Transparency and information accessibility must be well-maintained to keep our digital space healthy," he explained.

Adopting Global Governance Models: Digital Market Act and Digital Service Act

One of the important steps proposed by Menkominfo is adopting the Digital Market Act (DMA) and Digital Service Act (DSA) from the European Union. According to him, this adoption can ensure fair competition between large digital platforms and national industry players in Indonesia, while creating a safe digital space for users.

"We must implement regulations that ensure a level playing field between large digital platforms and national industry players. These regulations can help us create a healthy and competitive digital space," he stressed.

Developing Digital Talent for the Future

In addition, developing digital talent is one of Menkominfo's main priorities in strengthening the national digital ecosystem. Technology education programs such as coding, according to Budi Arie, should be the main focus in formal and non-formal education programs in Indonesia. He invited UNESCO and other partners to collaborate in strengthening digital training programs.

"Through formal and non-formal education, we need to equip people with new digital skills so that they are ready to face future challenges," he said.

International and Regional Cooperation in Creating a Safe Digital Space

Budi Arie also highlighted the importance of global and regional cooperation in digital governance. The Global Digital Compact and Internet Governance Forum (IGF) initiatives have strengthened international agreements on the importance of creating a safe, inclusive digital space that respects human rights. In addition, at the ASEAN level, the roadmap for AI governance through the Bandar Seri Begawan Roadmap has become an important reference for member countries, including Indonesia.

In Indonesia, the government has formulated various regulations to safeguard security and privacy in the digital world, such as the Personal Data Protection Law. This is part of an effort to ensure that internet users in Indonesia are well protected.

Vision for Indonesia Gold 2045 Through Strengthening the Digital Ecosystem

Strong digital governance will be a key pillar in achieving the vision of Indonesia Gold 2045. Through close collaboration between the government, industry, and UNESCO, Budi Arie is optimistic that Indonesia can build an inclusive, sustainable, and future-ready digital ecosystem.

"By strengthening digital governance, we can create a productive and empowering digital space, which will contribute to the realization of Indonesia Gold 2045," he concluded
