Denpasar, INTI – The Bali International Airshow (BIAS) 2024 opened with a major leap forward in low-carbon aviation, marking a new beginning for Indonesia's aviation sector. In support of global decarbonization efforts, the event featured a key panel discussion on the topic of "Global and Regional Collaboration Potential on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)", highlighting global collaboration opportunities in developing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as a major solution to aviation sector decarbonization.
Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, led the discussion, outlining Indonesia’s action plan to accelerate the adoption of SAF technologies. "Indonesia is committed to supporting global efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. With this roadmap, we are ready to become a major player in the green aviation industry," said Luhut. He also noted that 148 countries have submitted aviation emission mitigation actions to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
This discussion was also attended by prominent figures such as Tony Blair, former UK Prime Minister and now Executive Chairman of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. Blair emphasized the importance of collaboration between governments and the private sector to realize the energy transition in aviation. "Climate change challenges require concrete actions from various sectors. Global collaboration is key," Blair stated.
On the other hand, the Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development at PT Pertamina (Persero), Salyadi Saputra, emphasized the importance of developing SAF in Indonesia. "SAF is the main solution to reduce the aviation sector's carbon footprint. Pertamina is ready to support this process by exploring sustainable feedstocks," explained Salyadi.
Representing the national airline, Daniel Putut Kuncoro from Lion Air Group, reaffirmed the company's commitment to using SAF. "Lion Air is ready to collaborate with the government to reduce carbon emissions for a greener future," he asserted.
The exhibition also featured Anand Stanley, President of Airbus Asia Pacific, who was optimistic that Indonesia has great potential to support global aviation sector decarbonization. "Collaboration between the aviation industry, governments, and energy producers will create a sustainable SAF ecosystem in Indonesia," Anand explained.
