Jakarta, INTI - The exponential growth of digital data has positioned data centers at the forefront of technological innovation and environmental responsibility. Ark Data Centres, a leading provider in the field, has been a pioneer in balancing skyrocketing digital demand with sustainable practices. Since its founding in 2005, Ark has implemented a range of green initiatives to reduce its environmental impact, guided by Pip Squire, the Head of Sustainability.
The Role of Data Centers in a Digital Economy
Data centers are critical to modern digital infrastructure, processing and storing vast amounts of data that support our daily digital interactions. From social media and streaming services to cloud storage, each digital action we take relies on powerful data centers. Yet, this convenience comes with a significant environmental footprint. With data usage doubling roughly every two years, the demand for data centers has surged. However, this growth raises a key question: How can the industry scale sustainably?
Ark's Commitment to Sustainability
Ark Data Centres has placed sustainability at the heart of its operations from the outset. Pip Squire, who has been with Ark since its early days, has held numerous leadership roles focused on energy, design, and sustainability. His diverse experience has allowed him to drive Ark’s sustainability efforts with a unique perspective.
"We’ve always had sustainability at the heart of what we do," Squire emphasizes. Early on, Ark focused on energy efficiency, adopting systems that minimized energy waste and maximized the use of renewable energy sources.
Reducing Energy Consumption with Fresh Air Cooling
One of Ark’s notable innovations is its pioneering use of fresh air cooling, which minimizes the need for mechanical cooling—a highly energy-intensive part of data center operations. This approach leverages outside air to maintain optimal temperatures inside the data rooms.
Despite the energy savings, fresh air cooling presented a challenge in the form of increased water consumption during warmer months. "We use evaporative cooling during summer months, which requires a lot of water," Squire explains. Ark has tackled this issue by introducing rainwater harvesting systems that help maintain water efficiency even during peak periods.
Solar Energy and a Shift to Renewable Fuels
Beyond cooling efficiencies, Ark has integrated renewable energy sources across its operations. Solar panels have been a part of Ark’s infrastructure from the start, with the first data center already equipped with rooftop solar. To further reduce its carbon footprint, Ark has transitioned from diesel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) for its backup power, cutting emissions by 95% and reducing particulate and nitrogen oxide emissions—benefiting both the environment and surrounding communities.
A Holistic Approach to Emissions: Scope 1, 2, and 3
Ark's sustainability efforts extend beyond its own operations to address indirect emissions. Scope 1 covers emissions directly within Ark’s control, primarily greenhouse gases. Scope 2 involves emissions from purchased electricity, which Ark includes in its sustainability reports. Scope 3, however, is more challenging as it involves the broader supply chain. Ark collaborates closely with its suppliers to meet joint carbon reduction goals, recognizing that these relationships are vital for a collective move towards net-zero.
Exploring Innovative Energy Solutions: Micro Modular Nuclear Reactors (MMNRs)
In addition to renewable energy, Ark is investigating the potential of Micro Modular Nuclear Reactors (MMNRs) for consistent zero-carbon power. Unlike renewable energy, which is often intermittent, MMNRs can provide reliable baseload energy without grid strain. "MMNRs offer excellent efficiency for baseload generation without requiring large spaces," Squire explains. He believes that MMNRs could guarantee 100% zero-carbon energy for Ark’s clients, potentially supporting local grids and expediting the journey to net-zero.
Ark’s Impact and Future Vision
Ark Data Centres’ sustainability journey demonstrates that ambitious environmental goals are achievable with innovation and commitment. By embracing a diverse energy mix, adopting water-saving technologies, and aligning with its suppliers on carbon reduction, Ark has set a precedent for the industry. Ark’s vision for a sustainable future doesn’t only benefit its clients—it contributes to a more sustainable digital economy.
