INTI,- The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) has called on the government and telecommunications operators to increase internet penetration and growth in the country.
During the launch of the APJII survey report titled "Profile of Indonesian Internet Users & Trends 2023" in Jakarta on Monday, APJII Chairman Muhammad Arif highlighted that an infrastructure roadmap is crucial in overcoming the challenges of internet growth in Indonesia.
Arif explained that one of the challenges faced in the limited digitalization growth in Indonesia is the lack of harmonization between regulations at the central and regional levels. He emphasized the need for cohesive regulations and policies that can facilitate the development and expansion of internet infrastructure across the nation.
"The government plays a vital role in creating an enabling environment for internet growth. It is essential to establish a comprehensive roadmap that includes the harmonization of regulations, investment incentives, and support for infrastructure development," said Arif.
The survey report revealed that internet penetration in Indonesia has been steadily increasing, reaching 73% of the population in 2023. However, there is still a significant digital divide, particularly in rural areas and remote regions, where internet access remains limited or non-existent.
To bridge this gap, APJII suggests that the government and telecommunication operators focus on improving infrastructure development, especially in underserved areas. This includes the deployment of broadband networks, expansion of mobile coverage, and investment in the necessary technologies to support internet connectivity.
Arif also emphasized the importance of affordability and accessibility, stating that efforts should be made to ensure that internet services are affordable for all segments of society. This could be achieved through price regulation, subsidies, and partnerships between the government and industry players.
Furthermore, the APJII survey highlighted the increasing importance of the internet for various aspects of Indonesian society, including education, e-commerce, digital banking, and government services. As more services and activities shift online, the need for reliable and high-speed internet becomes even more critical.
The government has recognized the significance of internet growth and digitalization in Indonesia's development agenda. Various initiatives and programs have been implemented to improve internet access and promote digital literacy. However, there is still work to be done to ensure that the benefits of the digital era reach all citizens, regardless of their geographical location or socioeconomic status.
In response to APJII's call, the government has expressed its commitment to working closely with industry stakeholders to address the challenges hindering internet growth. Efforts will be made to streamline regulations, provide investment incentives, and collaborate on infrastructure development projects.
As Indonesia strives to become a digital powerhouse in Southeast Asia, enhancing internet growth and bridging the digital divide will be crucial for driving economic growth, empowering communities, and ensuring equal opportunities for all Indonesians.
The APJII survey report serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, industry players, and stakeholders to gain insights into the current state of internet usage and trends in Indonesia. It provides a foundation for informed decision-making and collaborative efforts in advancing the country's digital agenda.
With a comprehensive roadmap, strong collaboration between the government and industry, and a focus on inclusive growth, Indonesia can unlock its full potential in the digital age and position itself as a regional leader in the internet economy. ***. Hans
